corner view: bygones

Corner View is a weekly appointment - each Wednesday - created by Jane (Spain) and curated by Francesca (Italy), where bloggers from all corners of the world share their view on a pre-arranged theme.  The theme this week is "bygones", and comes from Nicki (Netherlands).
I am a big fan of old buildings and love to see them restored and repurposed.
They might not all have amazing craftsmanship like the one pictured above....
...but all too often I'm passing by scenes like this one.
It is my hope that we as a community can really see the value in our older structures
and up our efforts to preserve them....
...before we no longer have that option.

i love your way of observing, bev. your first few images remind me of a shopping mall i came across in poland. poland loves shopping malls! but here now, an old paper mill'd been restored to visionary accomodation for offices and shops. it sat right in the middle of nature, and didn't feel obstructive at all. so, i agree. let's preserve! while we still have that option. n♥

I SO agree. Too many buildings here in Orlando are torn down because people don't see the history value in them. They aren't THAT old, so they are considered to not have historical value. Well, maybe today they don't, but think of 100 years from now.

In my hometown of Philadelphia, so many of the beautiful old buildings are being torn down because they can't afford to restore them to usability. It is SO sad.

great post!! i like to keep old buildings too and sometimes (or often) they get ignored and instead they build ugly new buildings....

I'm like you, I admire the old buildings. It's important to preserve it. In France, the old buildings are renovated or protected... globally.

I couldn't agree more! And what lovely examples you have to show why you should refurbish, not demolish!

goodness, that building so close to the road looks very dangerous! I agree, we should invest in preserving, instead than wasting and building new stuff.

I'm with you on that! I love old buildings and the stories they have to tell!

Ps ... I do still swim but not as much as I'd like and I'm pretty sure the kids could beat me now! :)

The older buildings had such great character built into them.

We're all in agreeance there. And yet, the world moves at such a reckles pace... Let's hope before long more like us stand up and put a halt to demolishing, and start appreciating bygones for what they are: links to where we come from.

Oh yes Bev - I couldn't agree more. We lost so many beautiful old neo-gothic buildings when we had our earthquake in 2011 and since then we have lost even more with people deciding it is not worth the candle to earthquake-proof their old buildings and so just pulling them down. Heart-breaking. There are very few old buildings left here now :-(

Indeed, preserving is good, when done with love and a bit of hindsight (I have see some things preserved at all cost, that really didn't deserve it, whereas too many great building simply disappear in a couple of hours…).
