It was a great day for people-watching at the NC Museum of Art on Sunday. I took this photo in a room where the entire collection of original art for the book “Island Boy” was displayed. Barbara Cooney’s (who also illustrated Ox-Cart Man) work was completely charming and it was awesome that the art, from dust cover to end page, was there. The whole story was painted directly onto the walls above and below each framed page. When Dave & I walked into the small room we saw this family holding each other and slowly moving from piece to piece, while the woman on the far right read the story aloud. From their reaction at the end of the story, not to mention how close they were holding each other, this was a really special time for them. We stood quietly on the other side of the room so we wouldn’t disturb them. Really sweet.

Recently I met the son of Donald Hall, the author of the Ox Cart Man. We saw one of the original books plus many of his poems and other books. I was impressed. The scene you describe sounds very special.
Really touching and sweet . . .
Loved this!
